Sargent's portraits subtly capture sitters' individuality, rivaling Velázquez. His 'Madame X' (1884) is now acclaimed, but initially sparked controversy, leading him to move to London. Despite spending less than a year in the U.S., his work there, like the Boston Public Library decorations, is exceptional. Though not typically considered an impressionist, Sargent employed impressionistic techniques, as seen in 'Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood'. Around 1910, he shifted focus to landscapes. In an era emphasizing Impressionism, Sargent favored Realism, painting portraits of the wealthy. Initially dismissed, his status as a great artist has since grown.
